There are thousands of cars on ClassicCars.com, but some of them are on a completely different level of rarity and importance. Although you may have to dig deep to find these significant vehicles with amazing history, the search is well worth the time. A perfect example of this kind of car is our Pick of the Day: a Mille Miglia-raced 1929 OM 665 Superba in Milano, Italy, listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a U.S.-based broker.
The car manufacturer OM (Officine Meccaniche) was founded in February 1899, but it didn’t move into car production until it took over the Brixia-Züst company’s Brescia factory in 1917. The first OM-badged car was introduced in 1918. Competition was always important to OM; as early as 1920, one of its cars won the Coppa del Garda. The company would go on to enjoy success through the 1920s, which included finishing fourth and fifth overall at Le Mans in 1925 and 1926, respectively. At the end of the inaugural Mille Miglia race in 1927, OM cars finished first, second, and third.
In 1925, OM released a higher-performance six-cylinder model called the 665. The broker describes this particular 665 as having bodywork designed by Mario Casaro and crafted by Carrozzeria Moderna. The International OM Register recognizes it as one of the very few cars that is still original in every detail, including its exterior paint and interior materials, although the leather upholstery and convertible top have been replaced.
Since its rediscovery in 2016, the car has started eight Mille Miglias (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025, and 2026), along with two Gran Premio Nuvolari and two Giro di Sicilia races. Due to their history, OM cars also enjoy an early starting position at the Mille Miglia, which adds to the appeal of the event’s centenary next year.
The documentation for this OM 665 is extensive, consisting of rediscovery photographs; original period paperwork such as its Trieste and Free Territory registration booklet; restoration records; North Cape press coverage; sworn appraisal by a court-appointed expert; CSAI (Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana), ASI (Automotoclub Storico Italiano), and FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) passports; current CRS (Certificato di Rilevanza Storica); and its Registro 1000 Miglia listing. If you want a car that will give you a great chance of getting into the Mille Miglia, Pebble Beach, Le Mans Classic, Goodwood, Hampton Court, Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and likely even Villa d’Este, this OM is will not only do that, but it is also extremely likely to win you quite a few awards wherever you show it. It is the classic car equivalent of a Swiss Army knife, one that will be welcome and celebrated at any event you can think of.
This stunning and historic 1929 OM 665 is being offered for what I would call a very reasonable price of $1.4 million. If you consider where this collector car can take you, that price seems more than reasonable. There are very few other cars that can provide entry into the best events in the world and all of them are likely to cost quite a few million dollars more. This is a true connoisseur’s car and the kind of vehicle that will always impress those who understand it. As they say, if you know, you know. Personally, I would love to own it because it is an example of a perfect one-car collection.
